Bulletin n. 7076

05/07/2024 - 07:38

The number of VLP seismic events (standard values 5-12) is high, 15.6 events/hour.

The amplitude of seismic tremor is very high.

The infrasonic activity is high. The acoustic pressure of explosions is medium, 1.3 bar (standard values <1 bar). The amplitude of puffing is medium, ~60 mbar.

Tiltmeters analysis At 12:11 UTC of yesterday (04/07/2024), a major explosive event occurred, characterized 1.22 microradians. Since 13:00 UTC tiltmeters recorded a deflation of 8 microradiands associated with the opening of a new vent at 700 m a.s.l.

Thermal activity of explosive events is low. The number of thermal transients in the NE sector of the crater (standard = 100) is low, 56. The amplitude of thermal transients is low, 2 ºF. Exit velocity of pyroclasts, estimated through thermal camera analysis, is low, 16 m/s.

MODIS thermal anomalies are high: 157 MW (01:00 UTC yesterday).

Rockfall activity is very high. The number of rockfalls is 36 per day.

SO2 flux in the NE sector of the crater terrace is not available

CO2 flux based on the C/S of 1.76 mesured at 01:20 UTC on 2024/07/05 is low, 57 t/d

Indice di Attività Vulcanica: very high

  • Seismic (VLP) rate HIGH
  • Seismic tremor VERY HIGH
  • Puffing MEDIUM
  • Acustic pression of explosions MEDIUM
  • Thermal activity LOW
  • SO2 flux not available
  • CO2 flux LOW
  • Rockfall activity VERY HIGH

The volcanic activity is characterized by Strombolian explosions, spattering activity and lava flow emitted from NE crater sector. In the last 24h, degassing activity was HIGH (puffing 60 mbar), associated to spattering activity located at NE crater. The pressure of the explosions is HIGH (max acoustic pressure 1.3 bar). The number of thermal transients by thermal cameras is LOW, with LOW amplitude and LOW exit velocity. The volcanic tremor showed VERY HIGH values. The number of VLP events shows MEDIUM values (11.7 events/hour). MODIS/VIIRS images showed HIGH thermal anomalies. CO2 flux, based on the C/S ratio of 1.76 measured on 05/07/2024 at 01.20 UTC, is LOW (57 t/d). The rockfall activity is VERY HIGH (VERY HIGH number of events characterized bu VERY HIGH pseudo-volume associated). At 12:11 UTC of yesterday (04/07/2024), a major explosive event occurred, characterized by VLP amplitude of 2.1x10-5 m, 1.22 microradians (recorded at the OHO tiltmeter), and 15.11 Pa located at the SW crater sector. Since 13:00 UTC the tiltmeters recorded a deflation of 8 microradiands associated with the opening of a new vent at 700 m a.s.l. that caused intense rockfall activity and emission of a lava flow, which reached the shoreline. The volcanic activity index is VERY HIGH. N.B. The number of VLP events could be underestimated due to the seismic noise caused by intense rockfall activity. The thermal activity is underestimated due to the ash coverage.
