Bulletin n. 7116

13/08/2024 - 23:05

The number of VLP seismic events (standard values 5-12) is medium, 10.2 events/hour.

The amplitude of seismic tremor is high.

The infrasonic activity is high. The acoustic pressure of explosions is high, 2.1 bar (standard values <1 bar). The amplitude of puffing is medium, ~78 mbar.

Tiltmeters analysis does not show any significant deformation of the volcano edifice

Thermal activity of explosive events is high. The number of thermal transients in the NE sector of the crater (standard = 100) is high, 508. The amplitude of thermal transients is high, 34 ºF. Exit velocity of pyroclasts, estimated through thermal camera analysis, is high, 41 m/s.

MODIS thermal anomalies are medium: 36 MW (00:36 UTC yesterday).

Rockfall activity is high. The number of rockfalls is 15 per day.

SO2 flux in the NE sector of the crater terrace is very high, 257 t/d

CO2 flux based on the C/S is not available

Indice di Attività Vulcanica: high

  • Seismic (VLP) rate MEDIUM
  • Seismic tremor HIGH
  • Puffing MEDIUM
  • Acustic pression of explosions HIGH
  • Thermal activity HIGH
  • SO2 flux VERY HIGH
  • CO2 flux not available
  • Rockfall activity HIGH

The volcanic activity is generally characterized by strombolian explosions, rich in scoria with ash emissions, located mainly at the NE crater sector and degassing (puffing/spattering) located at the NE crater sector. Starting from 12:00 UTC on 8/13/2024, an increase in volcanic tremor was recorded which from HIGH values, starting from 18:00 UTC increase to VERY HIGH values. These increases is correlated to an increase in spattering activity, at the NE crater sector, characterized, starting from 22:00 UTC, by an increase of the pressures up to HIGH values for degassing and VERY HIGH for explosions. This activity, from a geochemical point of view, is characterized by VERY HIGH values of SO2 which indicates a strong increase in transport of gas-rich magma. This increase in SO2 flux was preceded by a trend of increasing CO2 flux to VERY HIGH values, which has lasted for more than 1 week. In the last 24h, the Stromboli volcano showed a HIGH degassing activity (puffing/spattering with values of about 78 mbar). The explosive activity is VERY HIGH (max acoustic pressure 2,1 bar). The number of explosions (thermal transients) are HIGH, with a HIGH thermal amplitude and HIGH exit velocity of pyroclasts. The volcanic tremor shows HIGH to VERY HIGH values. The number of VLP events showed MEDIUM values (10.2 events/hour). MODIS/VIIRS thermal data shows MODERATE values (max 32 MW), consistent with the observed activity SO2 flux shows VERY HIGH values (last: 257 t/d recorded on the 14/08/2024), CO2 flux shows non new data (last: 640 t/d based on C/S value of 8.55 recorded on the 10/08/2024). The rockfall activity is HIGH (15 events detected with LOW to MEDIUM pseudo-volumes associated). The volcanic activity index is HIGH.
