Bulletin n. 7121
19/08/2024 - 08:33
The number of VLP seismic events (standard values 5-12) is medium, 10.1 events/hour.
The amplitude of seismic tremor is medium.
The infrasonic activity is high. The acoustic pressure of explosions is low, 0.8 bar (standard values <1 bar). The amplitude of puffing is medium, ~60 mbar.
Tiltmeters analysis Both the OHO and THK tiltmeters recorded an inflation and deflation signal, likely due to the occurrence of at least three landslides in succession around 20:30 UTC yesterday. However, the analysis does not show any significant deformation of the volcanic edifice.
Thermal activity of explosive events is high. The number of thermal transients in the NE sector of the crater (standard = 100) is high, 296. The amplitude of thermal transients is high, 50 ºF. Exit velocity of pyroclasts, estimated through thermal camera analysis, is medium, 38 m/s.
MODIS thermal anomalies: no thermal anomalies.
Rockfall activity is medium. The number of rockfalls is 7 per day.
SO2 flux in the NE sector of the crater terrace is high, 182 t/d
CO2 flux based on the C/S of 6.25 mesured at 07:20 UTC on 2024/08/19 is medium, 1309 t/d
Indice di Attività Vulcanica: high
- Seismic (VLP) rate MEDIUM

- SO2 flux HIGH
- CO2 flux MEDIUM
- Rockfall activity MEDIUM
The volcanic activity is generally characterized by strombolian explosions with HIGH pressure (max 2 bar), rich in scoria, located at the NE crater sector. Sustained explosions with only ash occur at the SW crater sector. Degassing (puffing/spattering), located at the NE crater sector, is characterized by HIGH pressure values (about 60 mbar). Since 12:00 UTC the infrasonic activity, both strombolian explosion and degassing/spattering, is decreased to MEDIUM values. This activity is correlated with seismic tremor characterized from HIGH values, also decreased since 12:00 UTC yesterday. The number of VLP events showed MEDIUM values (10.1 events/hour). Both the OHO and THK tiltmeters recorded an inflation and deflation signal, likely due to the occurrence of at least three landslides in succession around 20:30 UTC yesterday. However, the analysis does not show any significant deformation of the volcanic edifice. The number of explosions (thermal transients) are HIGH, with a HIGH thermal amplitude and MEDIUM exit velocity of pyroclasts. MODIS/VIIRS thermal data are unestimated due to cloud covering. SO2 flux shows HIGH values (last: 182 t/d recorded on the 18/08/2024). CO2 flux shows MEDIUM values (last: 1309 t/d based on C/S value of 6.25 recorded on the 19/08/2024). The rockfall activity is MEDIUM (7 events detected with LOW pseudo-volumes associated). The volcanic activity index is HIGH.
